The Issue:
In a 2025 survey of 1,791 registered nurses:
96% reported longer wait times for care because of short staffing.
90% reported delayed or cancelled procedures.
82% were aware of patients being put at risk in the last 12 months due to short staffing.
92% reported service reductions or disruptions.
The Solutions:
Stabilize + Support
- Retain – Experienced registered nurses are experts in the health care system.
- Recruit all Saskatchewan nursing graduates to remain in the province.
- Return – Remove barriers for willing retirees to return as supports and mentors for new graduates and new staff.
- Trust the frontline knowledge and experience of registered nurses and implement a nursing task force to develop nurse-driven solutions.
- Invest in Saskatchewan’s nursing workforce by ensuring the province is a competitive place within Canada to earn a living, raise a family and flourish.
Sustain + Grow
- Nurse-to-patient ratios – Evidence-based minimum nurse ratios will save lives, promote healthy work-life balance, and support nurse retention.
- Nurse Practitioners (NP) can do so much more than people know – NPs can diagnose, prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests and imaging, help patients manage chronic illnesses, refer to specialists and so much more.
- Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN) are in short supply – adding more RPN education seats to address growing shortages in youth, seniors’, in patient and community mental health services.
- “Sask made” nursing workforce – support nurses choosing to advance their practice in the communities where they live, particularly in rural, remote and hard to recruit areas - e.g. RN to NP or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to RN
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities and local high schools to promote registered nursing as a career.
- Professional development and lifelong learning are required to advance RN practice and maximize care for Saskatchewan's residents.
